After his conversion to Buddhism and his meeting with Sonam Gyatso, the Third Dalai Lama, Altan Khan built several temples in the town he had earlier founded, then known as Khokh Khot (Blue City) and today as Hohhot. Also in 1580 the great-grandfather of Zanabazar, Avtai Khan, met with the Third Dalai Lama and was converted to Buddhism. Avtai Khan at some point undoubtedly visited the monasteries at Khokh Khot. Some of the temples at Erdene Zuu, the monastery in Mongolia founded by Avtai Khan, are supposedly modeled on the temples in Hohhot. |
